Keeping Your Lighting Color Constant and Why It's Important

For most household lighting needs, especially where relatively few fixtures are required, color consistency is usually not much of an issue. Fixtures can be purchased from the same manufacturer and in smaller quantities, it’s likely that the lights that arrive will all have the same, consistent color. It’s also much less expensive to replace all lights in a single dwelling as opposed to a big commercial application.

If ordering many fixtures, especially different kinds of fixtures from different manufacturers, slight differences in the way the lights are assembled could lead to variations in the color from light to light. This is also where our previous discussion of color temperatures comes into play. By way of a quick recap, color temperature only accounts for the horizontal axis on the color spectrum, namely, blues and yellows. It says nothing about reds and greens. So two lamps from different manufacturers may have the same color temperature: the same yellow and blue notes, but may vary so much on the red and green spectrum that they are functionally totally different lights.

Since there are so many components that go into making an LED lamp, any one of them being manufactured differently can lead to variations in the light. It’s no longer a case of passing a current through a filament until it glows. So how do we best avoid these variations and keep consistent color through the space?

One important step is to have all permanent fixtures professionally installed. A qualified electrician will ensure that there is good, consistent electricity to each fixture, which will avoid hot spots or fixtures with less than optimal electrical service.

Another solution is to purchase as many fixtures and lamps as possible through a single manufacturer. Not all manufacturers are as careful about how their products are fabricated.
